Trip Report: Jaunts
First published in 2021-24. Reformatted 2025. This page is for various minor adventures that, by themselves, do not warrant individual trip reports. This page covers the time frame starting in July 2021. See Variation Authorized for similar material from 1994 through 2004, Miscellany for 2005 through July 2007, and Wanderings for material from 2007 through June 2021. Unlike my "normal" trip reports, this one is alphabetical rather than chronological. Just a reminder PIN means Permanent Installation Number and ILC means Installation Location Code; I include these codes for Air Force properties when I know them.Cottonwood Air Force Station
Cottonwood, Idaho
PIN 3294, ILC ENYW
46-04-01 N, 116-27-51 W
This property was assigned to Air Defense Command on 21 December 1955. It was listed in the 1956 USAF Installations Directory with identifier SM-150; this was changed to Z-150 on 1 July 1963. The property was inactivated on 1 March 1965. I visited the former operations site in August 2025. The former support facilities are further down the hill and now occupied by a prison. The former housing area is at the edge of town and I drove past it without stopping for photos.General view

Douglas Army Airfield
8 NW Douglas, Arizona
31-27-50 N, 109-36-10 W
Douglas is a bit remote. I visited this airfield in April 2024. My photography was limited because a prison is built on the property.5-vault Norden bombsight maintenance and storage building

Gasbuggy Nuclear Test Site
Dulce, New Mexico
36-40-40.4 N, 107-12-32.6 W
This was not a military site. The Atomic Energy Commission detonated a nuclear device here on 10 December 1967. This was part of Operation Plowshare, which looked for possible peaceful uses of nuclear devices.General view

I visited this WWII airfield back in August 2007. I returned in July 2023 and viewed this hangar from the nearby Mid-America Air Museum, which is well worth a visit.Hangar

Lonestar Pecos Electronic Scoring Site
aka Rattlesnake Electronic Scoring Site
17 SW Pecos, Texas
ILC PECO
31-13-02.1 N, 103-39-35.6 W
The term electronic scoring site (ESS) replaced the earlier term radar bomb scoring site (RBSS). This property was activated in 2001 and the facility began operations in 2002. By May 2011 the Air Force had declared it surplus and it was available for disposal through the General Services Administration.Sign

This was an Army depot from 1942 to 1948, then again from 1950 to 1955. It was built for the Army Service Forces but is similar in layout and building design to Army Air Forces depots from the same time period.Warehouse

Pratt Army Airfield
5 N Pratt, Kansas
37-42-15 N, 98-44-45 W
I visited this WWII airfield back in August 2007. I returned in August 2023 and enjoyed much better lighting for photography. According to display signage "The first two-vault building was built to support a squadron with twelve aircraft. When the squadron expanded to a bomb group of four squadrons, five vaults were built and enclosed in a wood-frame building which is no longer standing." The building I label as unidentified might be an airfield lighting vault, but I'm not certain.5-vault Norden bombsight maintenance and storage building

Walker Air Force Missile Site No. 4
Roswell, New Mexico
PIN 7812
This was one of a dozen Atlas F intercontinental ballistic missile sites near Roswell and supported by Walker AFB. The government acquired the land in 1960. The site was disgnated and assigned in 1961, activated in 1964, and inactivated in 1965. It is now operated as a bed and breakfast, and in 2024 I spent a night in the control center! For many more photos, and to book your own underground vacation, check it out at True Cold War Relic Atlas F Missile Silo / Bunker.Above ground
